Tara Matching Calculator
Tara Koota counts the distance, in nakshatras, from one partner's birth star to the other's — and vice versa — classifying each count into one of nine classical Tara types, five of which are considered auspicious. Worth 3 of the full 36 Ashtakoota points, it's classically read as an indicator of general health and well-being fit between the two.
Ayanamsa: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) · Rule: count nakshatras from each partner's birth star to the other's (both directions), classify into one of 9 Tara types, score 3 if both directions are auspicious, 1.5 if one is, 0 if neither

The Nine Tara Types
Counting forward through the 27 nakshatras and reducing to a 9-step cycle gives: Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyari, Sadhaka, Vadha, Mitra, and Ati-Mitra. Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra, and Ati-Mitra are classically auspicious; Vipat, Pratyari, and Vadha are not; and Janma (matching your own birth star exactly) is notably NOT considered auspicious.
Why This Calculator Checks Both Directions
Counting from Partner A's star to Partner B's gives a different Tara type than counting the reverse (since 27 doesn't evenly divide by 9 in a way that makes the two counts always match) — this calculator checks both directions and scores the full 3 points only when BOTH are auspicious, 1.5 when just one is, and 0 when neither is.
A Notable Case: Sharing the Exact Same Nakshatra
If both partners share the identical birth nakshatra, the count in both directions lands on "Janma" Tara — which, somewhat counterintuitively, is NOT classically auspicious for matching purposes, even though it might seem like the ultimate similarity.
