Grahan Dosha Calculator

Grahan Dosha — literally "eclipse affliction" — describes the classical Vedic condition where either luminary, the **Sun or the Moon**, sits conjunct one of the lunar nodes, **Rahu or Ketu**, in the same house. This mirrors the astronomical mechanism of a solar or lunar eclipse and is read as clouding whichever luminary is involved. This calculator checks the Sun and Moon independently against both nodes.

What Is Grahan Dosha?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon (via its node) blocks the Sun; a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow (represented by the nodes) falls on the Moon. Grahan Dosha applies that same symbolic logic natally: if the Sun sits with a node, its natural significations — vitality, authority, the father — are read as clouded; if the Moon sits with a node, its significations — the mind, emotional steadiness, the mother — are read as clouded instead.

Why Which Luminary Is Involved Matters

This calculator checks the Sun and Moon separately and reports exactly which one (or both) is conjunct which node, since the practical reading differs: a Sun-node conjunction is traditionally read through themes of ego, authority, and paternal relationships, while a Moon-node conjunction is read through themes of emotional stability, the mind, and maternal relationships. A chart with both afflicted is read as the stronger, rarer form of this dosha.

Rahu vs. Ketu: A Different Flavor of Affliction

The two nodes color the affliction differently — Rahu is classically associated with amplification, obsession, and unconventional or excessive expression of whatever it touches, while Ketu is associated with detachment, confusion, or a diffuse, hard-to-pin-down quality. A Sun-Rahu conjunction and a Sun-Ketu conjunction are both "Grahan Dosha," but their traditional flavor is meaningfully different.

Grahan Dosha Calculator FAQs

What is Grahan Dosha?
A classical affliction where the Sun or Moon is conjunct one of the lunar nodes (Rahu or Ketu) in the same house, symbolically mirroring a solar or lunar eclipse.
Is Grahan Dosha the same as being born during an actual eclipse?
No — it is a natal chart condition based on longitude conjunction with the nodes, independent of whether an actual eclipse occurred around the birth date.
Which is considered more significant: Sun-node or Moon-node conjunction?
Both are significant but colored differently — Sun-node conjunctions are read through vitality, authority, and paternal themes, while Moon-node conjunctions are read through the mind, emotions, and maternal themes.
Does having Grahan Dosha with Ketu differ from Grahan Dosha with Rahu?
Yes — Rahu's classical nature (amplification, obsession, excess) and Ketu's (detachment, confusion, diffusion) color the same basic affliction quite differently in practice.
Can a chart have Grahan Dosha on both the Sun and Moon at once?
Yes, though less commonly, since it requires both luminaries to each be conjunct a node — this calculator checks and reports both independently.
