Atmakaraka Calculator

Your **Atmakaraka** ("soul indicator") is the single most important planet in Jaimini astrology — the classical planet (Sun through Saturn) that has advanced furthest into the degrees of its own sign at your birth. Jaimini treats it as the significator of your soul's deepest drive and the specific karmic theme this incarnation is built around.

Ayanamsa: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) · System: Jaimini Saptakaraka (7-karaka) · Rule: the classical planet with the highest degree-in-sign among Sun through Saturn

Don't know your birth time? We'll approximate your chart using 6:00 AM local time. The Lagna (Ascendant) and house positions will be approximate.

What Is the Atmakaraka?

Jaimini's chara (movable) karaka system ranks the seven classical planets — Sun through Saturn, excluding the nodes — purely by how many degrees each has traveled into its current sign. Whichever planet has advanced the furthest becomes the Atmakaraka, the "doer" of the soul's agenda for this specific life.

Why Degree-in-Sign, Not House or Dignity

Unlike most classical significations, the Atmakaraka assignment ignores house placement, sign dignity, and aspects entirely — it is purely a race by degree. A debilitated planet can still be the Atmakaraka if it simply happens to sit at a higher degree than every other classical planet, which is precisely why Jaimini treats this method as revealing something the ordinary Parashari system doesn't directly show.

How the Atmakaraka Is Read

Each planet colors the Atmakaraka differently — a Mars Atmakaraka points toward a life theme of courage, conflict, or decisive action; a Jupiter Atmakaraka toward wisdom, teaching, or expansion; a Saturn Atmakaraka toward discipline, restriction, or long, patient effort. The house the Atmakaraka occupies, and its own dignity there, further shape how that core theme actually plays out.

Atmakaraka Calculator FAQs

What is the Atmakaraka?
The classical planet (Sun through Saturn) with the highest degree-in-sign in your chart, treated in Jaimini astrology as the significator of your soul's core drive and this life's specific karmic theme.
Can the Sun or Moon be an Atmakaraka?
Yes — the Atmakaraka is determined purely by degree-in-sign among all seven classical planets, so any of them, including the luminaries, can hold this role.
Why don't Rahu and Ketu count toward the Atmakaraka?
The classical 7-karaka (Saptakaraka) scheme this calculator uses is limited to the seven physical planets; a separate 8-karaka (Ashtakaraka) tradition does include Rahu, but that is a distinct, less commonly used variant.
Does a debilitated planet lose its Atmakaraka status?
No — Atmakaraka assignment depends only on degree-in-sign, completely independent of dignity, so even a debilitated planet can be the Atmakaraka if its degree is highest.
How is the Atmakaraka used beyond this single calculator?
It anchors several other Jaimini techniques on this site, including the Ishta Devata Calculator (via its Navamsa placement) and the ranking shown in the Chara Karaka Calculator.
