What Is a Kundli?

A Kundli (also spelled Kundali, or called a janam patrika) is a chart of the heavens drawn for the exact date, time and place of a person's birth. In everyday Indian usage the word means more than just a birth chart diagram — it refers to the whole document families keep and consult across a lifetime: for a child's naming ceremony, for evaluating a marriage match, for choosing an auspicious date, and for understanding a person's strengths, challenges and timing through their planetary periods.

Underneath that cultural role, a Kundli is built from the same sidereal astronomy every Vedic chart uses: the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets at the moment of birth, organized into twelve houses counted from the Lagna (ascendant). What makes a document a 'Kundli' rather than just 'a chart' is really the tradition of use around it — generations of families treating it as a reference document, not a one-time reading.

• Lagna (ascendant) — the sign rising at your exact birth moment; it anchors the whole chart and sets the numbering of every house
• Rashi (Moon sign) — the sidereal sign your Moon occupied, the placement most Vedic astrologers mean when they ask your 'sign'
• Bhava (houses) — the twelve life-departments (self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, and so on) and which planets occupy each one
• Dasha — your Vimshottari dasha timeline, the sequence of planetary periods that governs which chart themes are active at any point in your life

Alongside these, this calculator also checks your Kundli for classical yogas and doshas — recognized planetary combinations, favorable and cautionary, that a traditional reading would flag as significant.

How a Kundli Is Traditionally Used

A Kundli is rarely read once and set aside. Families commonly return to it for marriage matching (Kundli Milan), where the birth charts of prospective partners are compared, most often through the Ashtakoota system's eight compatibility factors, before a match is finalized.

It's also the reference point for muhurta — choosing an auspicious date and time for a wedding, a housewarming (griha pravesh), starting a business, or another significant event — and for remedial astrology, where an astrologer reads a difficult yoga, dosha or dasha period in the Kundli and recommends a specific practice (a mantra, a fast, a gemstone, a charitable act) associated with the planet involved.

A Kundli is also, simply, how many Indian families first learn a child's temperament and likely direction in life — not as a fixed script, but as a starting point for guidance through school, career choices and beyond.

Reading Your Kundli's House Chart

The house (Bhava) chart is the part of a Kundli most people picture — a diamond or grid divided into twelve compartments, one per house, with your Lagna sign fixed in the first house and every other sign following it around the chart in order.

Each house governs a specific area of life: the 1st house is the self and body, the 2nd is wealth and family, the 4th is home and mother, the 7th is marriage and partnership, the 10th is career and public standing, and so on through all twelve. A planet's house placement tells you where its significations are concentrated in your life, while its sign placement tells you how it expresses that influence.

This calculator uses the whole-sign house system, the method most consistent with classical Parashari texts: each of the twelve signs from your Lagna forms one complete house, rather than dividing houses by cusp degrees.
