'Birth star' is the everyday English term for Janma Nakshatra — literally 'birth Nakshatra' — the one of 27 lunar mansions the Moon was passing through at your exact moment of birth. Each Nakshatra spans roughly 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and carries its own ruling planet, presiding deity and symbol.

The computation is identical to any Nakshatra placement — it comes from the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth — but 'birth star' specifically signals the practical, lived use of that placement: as a recurring personal marker and as a reference point for timing events, rather than only a personality classification.

Birth Star Anniversaries

In many Indian households, particularly in South Indian traditions, a person's birth-star day is celebrated as their personal anniversary — sometimes alongside the solar birthday, sometimes instead of it. The birth-star anniversary falls on the day each year (or each lunar month, for more frequent observances) when the Moon returns to that same Nakshatra, following the Hindu lunisolar calendar rather than the fixed solar (Gregorian) calendar.

Because the lunisolar calendar and the solar calendar drift relative to each other, a birth-star anniversary does not fall on the same Gregorian date every year — it can shift by roughly two to three weeks from one year to the next, which is exactly why it doesn't line up with a fixed solar birthday.
