What "Whole Sign" Houses Means

In the Whole Sign system, the entire sign occupied by your Lagna becomes your 1st house, the next sign becomes the 2nd, and so on around the zodiac — each house is exactly one 30° sign, with no cusp math involved. This is the house system most classical Parashari texts assume by default, and remains the most widely used system among practicing Vedic astrologers today.

What Each House Broadly Governs

Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 (kendras) anchor the chart's structure — self, home, partnership, career. Houses 1, 5, 9 (trikonas) govern fortune and dharma. Houses 6, 8, 12 (dusthanas) govern conflict, transformation, and loss. The remaining houses (2, 3, 11) round out wealth, effort, and gains. This calculator shows exactly which sign and planets occupy each of these twelve roles in your specific chart.

The Karaka Column

Each house also has a natural karaka — a planet classically associated with that house's themes regardless of chart specifics (e.g., Jupiter for the 9th, Saturn for the 8th). Comparing a house's occupying planets and lord against its natural karaka is a standard first step in judging how strongly that house's themes are likely to express.

What is a "house" in Vedic astrology?
One of 12 divisions of the chart, each governing a specific domain of life (self, wealth, communication, home, and so on), counted starting from your Lagna (rising sign).
Why does this calculator use Whole Sign houses instead of a cusp-based system?
Whole Sign is the house system assumed by default in most classical Parashari texts and remains the most widely used system in practicing Vedic astrology, so it's the fixed default here.
What does it mean if a house has no occupants?
An empty house is read primarily through its lord's placement and condition elsewhere in the chart, rather than through any planet sitting directly in it — an empty house is not itself a weakness.
How is a house's lord determined?
By the classical rulership of the sign occupying that house — for example, if the 5th house falls in Leo, the Sun (Leo's ruler) is the 5th lord, regardless of where the Sun itself is placed.
What is the difference between this and the Bhava Chalit Chart?
This calculator shows the sign-based Rashi (D1) houses; the Bhava Chalit Chart recomputes house boundaries from your exact Lagna degree, which can shift a few planets near sign boundaries into an adjacent house.
