Chara Karaka Calculator

The **chara (movable) karakas** are the backbone of Jaimini astrology — all seven classical planets, ranked from highest to lowest degree-in-sign, each assigned a fixed significatory role from Atmakaraka (soul) down to Darakaraka (spouse). This calculator computes the complete ranking for your chart in one table, rather than one karaka at a time.

Ayanamsa: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) · System: Jaimini Saptakaraka (7-karaka) · Rule: rank Sun through Saturn by degree-in-sign, descending

Don't know your birth time? We'll approximate your chart using 6:00 AM local time. The Lagna (Ascendant) and house positions will be approximate.

The Seven Karaka Roles

In descending order of degree-in-sign: Atmakaraka (soul, core life theme), Amatyakaraka (career, counsel), Bhratrikaraka (siblings, courage), Matrikaraka (mother, home comfort), Putrakaraka (children, intelligence, creativity), Gnatikaraka (relatives, obstacles), and Darakaraka (spouse, marriage). Every classical planet plays exactly one of these seven roles in your chart.

Why the Full Ranking Matters, Not Just the Extremes

Most discussion of chara karakas focuses on the Atmakaraka and Darakaraka alone, but Jaimini analysis of siblings, mother, children, and even obstacles or chronic difficulties (Gnatikaraka) all depend on this same seven-planet ranking. Seeing the complete order at once makes clear how tightly these significations are linked — a small shift in one planet's degree can reshuffle several roles at once.

Chara Karakas vs. Fixed House Significations

Unlike the Parashari system's fixed house meanings (2nd house = wealth, 7th = marriage, etc.), the chara karaka system floats its significations onto whichever planet happens to occupy each rank in a specific chart — a genuinely person-specific layer of analysis that Jaimini treats as a parallel, complementary lens to the standard house-based reading.

Chara Karaka Calculator FAQs

What are chara karakas?
The seven classical planets ranked by degree-in-sign from highest to lowest, each assigned a fixed role (Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka, Darakaraka) used throughout Jaimini astrology.
Why are there exactly seven chara karakas?
The classical Saptakaraka ("seven karaka") scheme uses only the seven physical planets (Sun through Saturn); a separate, less commonly used 8-karaka tradition adds Rahu to the ranking.
Which chara karaka is considered most important?
The Atmakaraka (soul significator) is generally treated as the most important for overall life-theme analysis, though the Darakaraka is equally central for marriage-specific questions.
Can this ranking change over time?
No — it's fixed at birth based on each planet's natal degree-in-sign; only the dashas and transits of these planets activate their significations at different points in life.
How is this different from checking Atmakaraka, Darakaraka, and Amatyakaraka individually?
This calculator shows the complete seven-role ranking in one table, including the middle three karakas (Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka) that the individual single-karaka calculators on this site don't cover separately.
